Advice For Opening an Ice Cream-Gelato Shop - Answers About Business Plan, Licenses, and More

If you are thinking about opening an ice cream / gelato / frozen yogurt store, you probably have many questions. Some of those questions may include:

• How much money do I need?

• What kind of ice cream equipment do I need?

• How much money can I make the first year?

• What kind of licenses and permits do I need?

This article will try to answer those questions, although in reality, there are no set answers. It all depends greatly on your location, budget, business skills, etc.

First things first though, if you are considering opening a shop, make sure to write a step-by-step business plan to guide you along the way. Your store business plan should include information about your market and your competitors. Think about things like who you are trying to target (your market) and how your shop will differentiate from your competitors (you must have a strong competitive advantage). Other things your business plan should include are your marketing / advertising strategy, how you'll price each product, how many employees you plan to have, etc.

Another advice would be to visit every shop in the area and study things like their layout/design, menu, etc. Also, if you don't have any experience in the field, try getting a part-time job at a local parlor.

Now, the answer to your questions:

- How much money do I need to open my shop?

It really depends on the kind of ice cream/gelato store you would like to start and your budget. You can possibly buy a franchise or an existing small location for around $50,000 or start your own from anywhere between $100K and $500K.

- What kind of equipment do I need?

Depending on the type of shop you want, you could start with a simple ice cream dipping cabinet or have other ice cream equipment like a soft-serve machine, batch freezers to make your own ice cream/gelato/sorbet, or the amazing Pacojet to make all kinds of frozen-dessert treats. Again, it really depends on your budget.

- How much money can I make?

The best way to find out the answer to this question, is to write a specific business plan with a profitably section. Also, Electro Freeze has a special website called Ice Cream Academy which offers several courses to help your store become more profitable.

Also, this great profitability calculator can give you an idea about how much money you can make on items such as soft-serve, shakes, and slushies, per day, weekly, monthly, or per year.

- What kind of licenses and permits do I need?

Start by visiting your city's business license division to find out which city licenses you'll need. Then visit your state's government website for information about state permits. Lastly, through the IRC's website you can apply for a federal tax ID number. If you need help, hire a lawyer, and/or accountant to help you during this, sometimes confusing stage.

NICRA: A good place to visit is the National Ice Cream Retailers Association, a non-profit trade association of ice cream retailers, wholesalers, and suppliers to the frozen dessert industry.

Desserts are one of those lovable guilty pleasures. The sweetness of a nice dessert after a good meal is about as good as anything you could want to eat, especially if it's prepared right. Whether it's a hot cake or some cold ice cream, there are so many desserts in this world to enjoy. I know that I've had my share of them, but here are a few that I've just recently tried. If you haven't had these before, look into these as they make for some great dessert ideas.

1. White chocolate mousse. You're used to eating regular chocolate when it comes to mousse, but white chocolate mousse can be just as delicious, or even more so depending on who you ask. Mix in some raspberry drizzle and you've got yourself a real winner.

2. Ice cream martini in a glass. This is another creative idea that has more to do with presentation than anything else. This will look like a top of the line dessert for your guests. Have some fun with it and throw in some trimmings so that you have a sundae in a martini glass.

3. Mango rose with ice cream filling. You're basically cutting the mango up to look like a rose. It's not as hard as it sounds, as there are instructions online. Fill it up with ice cream or sorbet. Whether it's vanilla or something more adventurous, you'll have a sweet, tasty treat on your hands. Highly recommended for anyone who likes a mango.

Ice Cream Cake Recipe - Easy Ice Cream Cake Recipe

If you're in the mood for an ice cream cake, but don't want to spend a lot of prep time in the kitchen, this recipe really takes the cake! You can substitute sherbet or sorbet for the ice cream for an nice variation.

1 (10-inch) angel food cake

1/2 gallon any flavor ice cream

Directions

Let ice cream sit on the counter awhile until it softens enough where you can spread it easily (do not let it melt).

Pull angel food cake into 2-inch chunks. Layer the cake chunks on the bottom of a 9-inch or 10-inch tube pan. With a large knife, spread a layer of the softened ice cream over the cake chunks. Add another layer of cake on top of the ice cream. Keep repeating the layers until you've used up all the cake and ice cream.

Put the cake into the freezer and freeze for 2 to three hours. Before serving, carefully remove the cake from the pan and place on a serving dish. Top with your favorite sundae sauce.

A delicious and really easy to make ice cream sandwich dessert recipe. For a little variety, try caramel ice cream topping instead of, or in addition to, the chocolate topping. Additional garnishes - nuts, candy sprinkles and maraschino cherries

16 - 24 ice cream sandwiches

1 (16 oz.) container frozen whipped topping

1 (12 oz.) jar chocolate hot fudge topping

1 (1.5 oz.) chocolate candy bar, grated

Directions

In a 9 x 13-inch baking dish, place half of the ice cream bars on the bottom of the dish, side by side. Spread half of the chocolate fudge on top of the ice cream bars. Spread half of the whipped topping on top of the fudge.

Place the remaining ice cream bars on top of the first layer and repeat with layers of chocolate fudge sauce and whipped topping. Sprinkle the grated chocolate on top.

Cover and freeze the cake for 1 hour. Keep the unused portion covered and frozen.

=> Fried Ice Cream Recipe: Mexican Fried Ice Cream Recipe

You'll find this tantalizing dessert served in many Mexican restaurants. Try substituting caramel or butterscotch topping for the honey. Also you can try using 2 parts cornflakes crumbs mixed with 1 part crushed vanilla wafers.

1 quart vanilla ice cream

3 cups crushed cornflakes cereal or cornflake crumbs

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

3 egg whites

2 quarts oil for deep frying

Whipped Cream

Honey

Maraschino Cherries

Directions

Scoop out 8 balls of ice cream and place on a baking sheet, return ice cream balls to freezer and freeze for 1 hour, or until firm.

In a shallow bowl or dish, combine the cornflakes and the cinnamon. Roll each frozen ice cream ball in half of the cornflake mixture, return to freezer for 15 minutes.

In a separate dish, beat the egg whites until foamy. Dip each frozen ice cream ball in the egg whites, then roll them in the remaining cornflake crumbs. Make sure the ice cream is covered up completely. For thicker coating, repeat the process. Freeze ice cream balls for 3 hours or until very firm.

When you are ready to serve the ice cream, heat up the cooking oil in a deep fat fryer or heavy saucepan to 375 degrees.

Place each ice cream ball into a wire frying basket or slotted spoon. Fry one or two of the balls at a time for 10 to 15 seconds, until the coating is a golden brown color. Drain on paper towels.

Serve immediately. Garnish with whipped topping, drizzled honey and maraschino a cherry on top.

This is an extremely light and simple ice cream recipe to make that is homemade and tastes really good considering there's only 3 ingredients. You can spice it up by adding crushed chocolate sandwich cookies or any kind of fruit.

8 cups milk

2 cups white sugar

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Directions

In a freezer canister or ice cream maker, combine the milk, sugar and vanilla. Freeze according to manufacturers directions.

Note: For a richer tasting ice cream, add 1 can of evaporated milk and use 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract.

French vanilla ice cream is richer tasting than regular vanilla ice cream. This recipe will have you craving more of that smooth, creamy vanilla flavor.

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup milk

3 egg yolks, beaten

1 tablespoon vanilla

2 cups whipping cream, chilled

Directions

In a saucepan or double boiler, mix the sugar, salt, milk and egg yolks. Cook over medium heat, continuously stirring until bubbles appear around the edge of the pan.

Vegan Recipes - Ideas

Another popular form of eating growing popular these days is veganism. Today one can find a series of vegan recipes, which will not only tantalise your taste buds. But will also spurt the imagination of those who believe it to be a dull meal.

Some recipe ideas could be:

A Mediterranean Dinner: roasted peppers and eggplant dip served with focaccia. Wild mushroom rice; couscous bean salad with grilled vegetables can be paired with of course some wine.

One such wine would be Pinot Grigio. Its crusty flavour blends with vegetables.

A wholesome Breakfast: hash browns (use soy milk) with greens and beans or scrambled tofu with it. Alternatively, you could opt for oat pancakes with fresh fruits or breakfast burritos with vegetables, bean or tofu stuffing.

A light-hearted Lunch: panini sandwich made from grilled portobello mushrooms, finely sliced zucchini, roasted bell peppers, sun dried tomatoes, and pesto stacked on the bread.

Or there is the tapenade crositin with stewed fruit and corn bread or strawberry sorbet. This can be well combined with Chianti wine. Its earthy favour blends well with olives and sun-dried tomatoes and naturally cuts through the recipes creaminess.

Each of these vegan recipes offer a unique profile, preserving the freshness and subtle flavours of the different ingredients.

These when paired with wines remember to stick to crisp, acidic whites for dishes like grilled vegetables and grains.

For pungent flavours or those made from spices, saffron etc choose medium-bodied red wines.

For herbed dishes with a fairly over tone of oregano mellow wines are a good proposition.

Diabetic Desserts - Delicious and Healthy Ices and Sorbet Recipes

Looking for recipes on how to make sorbets and ices? Look no more, you will find here a list of ices recipes that are not only delicious but also healthy and suitable for diabetics.

Pineapple Sorbet

2 tbsp water; 3 tsp gelatin; 225g can pineapple in natural juice, chopped; 3 tbsp fresh orange juice; ground ginger

Put the water in to a heatproof container, sprinkle in the gelatin and leave to soften. Stand the container in a pan of hot water and stir until the gelatin dissolves. Add the gelatin to the canned pineapple and juice and the orange juice. Process in a blender, then pour into a 550ml mould and leave to set in a freezer. Serve sprinkled with ginger.

Yogurt Orange Ice

150g natural yogurt; 200ml unsweetened orange juice; vanilla essence; orange food coloring

Mix together the yogurt, orange juice and a few drops of vanilla essence and food coloring. Put into a suitable container in a freezer and leave until partially frozen. Beat well, then freeze until firm. Serve with slices of fresh orange.

Orange Sorbet

1 tbsp fructose; 425ml boiling water; 175ml frozen concentrated orange juice, thawed; 2 egg whites

Dissolve the fructose in the boiling water. Add the concentrated orange juice, and mix well. Put in a suitable container in a freezer and remove when on the point of setting. Beat well. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and fold into the iced mixture, then freeze until firm.

Pineapple Boats

1 medium pineapple; 150g natural yoghurt; liquid sweetener

Cut the pineapple in half length ways, scoop out and dice the flesh. Retaining a few pieces to use as decoration, put the pineapple in a suitable container in a freezer, and leave until almost frozen. Remove from the freezer and mix with the yogurt and liquid sweetener. Use to fill the pineapple shells and decorate with the reserved pineapple pieces. Serve immediately.

Strawberry Ice

3 tbsp water; 3 tsp gelatin; 175g strawberries, hulled; 150g natural yogurt; liquid sweetener

Put the water in a heatproof container, sprinkle in the gelatin and leave to soften. Stand the container in a pan of hot water and stir until the gelatin dissolves. Leave to cool, then add the strawberries, yogurt and liquid sweetener. Sieve or process in a blender. Pour into a suitable container and leave in a freezer until solid.

Sugars deteriorates my body, foods that are lower in carbohydrates and high in nutrients are my lifetime fuel. This cake was inspired by the trip Rick and I made to Jonathan's at Gratz Park in Lexington, Kentucky, when I ordered Lemon Pound Cake for dessert. This is a delicious version of lemon pound cake, made of butter, sugar, eggs, flour, lemon juice, and lemon extract. It is baked in a tube cake pan, although you may bake it in individual servings—the way it was served at Jonathan's. Ingredients: 1 ½ cups butter, softened to room temperature 3 cups sugar 8 eggs 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 ½ tablespoons lemon juice 1 ½ tablespoons lemon extract In a large mixing bowl, cream 1 ½ cups butter and 3 cups sugar together. Beat with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add 8 eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add 3 cups flour, a little at a time, mixing well until all of the flour is incorporated and smooth. Stir in 1 ½ tablespoons lemon juice and 1 ½ tablespoons lemon extract. Pour batter into a greased and floured tube cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the deepest part of the cake comes out clean. Cool in pan 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from pan, place on a cake stand and let cool completely. I served my Perfect Lemon Pound Cake with Blueberry Sauce and Cranberry-Blueberry Sorbet, with a couple of thin lemon slices and a sprig of mint on the side. My family loved this dessert! 5. Sugar Cookies: The sugar cookie is a delicious sweet cookie that you can cut into a variety of shapes. Ingredients include: margarine (or butter), granulated sugar, egg vanilla, all-purpose flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
