We puttered around the house until about noon, then decided to go to Frankfurt to be beach bums. We walked along the seawall to the lighthouse where we saw many fishies of various sizes. The water that was inclosed by the seawall was a lot cleaner than the water had been in empire (no yellow scuzz {pollen?}). Of course another swim was in order so as usual Sigrid went in without hesitation, but Madeline a bit more grudgingly got in. Unfortunately the beautiful sun baked us like lobsters... too bad we're not in Maine yet! After our day at the beach Terri continued to spoil us by buying us fantastic ice cream at Moomer's, a Michigan specialty ice cream. Madeline got raspberry sorbet, filled with pieces of real raspberry; Sigrid got Chocolate Cookie-Monster, filled with pieces of Oreo cookie and cookie dough, which were both out of this world!!! A Few Places of Romance in Paris

In Woody Allen's judgement, "As long as you haven't been kissed during any of those rainy Parisian afternoons, you haven't been kissed at all." A long-time dweller of the French capital, I'd have a hard time not to agree with the most Parisian New Yorker. Paris is a place as perfect as they come to live a glorious romance, rekindle your marriage, or meet your lifetime someone. The question is: where do you start?



Finding your cafe terrace



I will start with an obvious spot: the sidewalk cafe terrace. There are thousands of such in Paris, and lovebirds are a common sight there. The cafe terrace is an enjoyable spot in more than one way. First, they offer a nice resting spot. Second, they make an ideal observatory. The streets become an aquarium, passer-bys are the fish, and you two become the observers. Third, sit down at a terrace where other couples are smooching, and you are part of a community setting a good example to the rest of the world. For all we need is love!



But where to turn to? Which cafe to choose? The choice is entirely yours, but I will dare a few recommendations. A favorite spot of mine is located in one of the wings of the Louvre museum. 'Les Chevaux de Marly' (Horses in Marly) has I.M. Pei's Pyramid on its left, and is built inside the wing which borders Rivoli Street (if you look towards Place de la Concorde, this is the right wing of the museum). The place offers a selection of snacks, and a nice warm chocolate. Its terrace is relatively protected from the wind and rain, which makes it a good spot in wintertime.



Now if you are a die-hard fan of the Latin Quarter, and the St Germain des Pres area, you will certainly want to sit at the terrace of 'Les Deux Magots' (A Pair of Old Bachelors). French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and his wife, writer Simone de Beauvoir, used to hole up there in the 50s. Rather large and well protected by a long awning, the terrace is a great spot to observe the foot traffic moving along the busy Boulevard St Germain. The atmosphere inside the cafe has kept some of its mid-20th century flavor. A tad on the expensive side, but history and a great view have a price, haven't they?



In my list of fave areas, Place de la Contrescarpe ranks high. It is located in the 5th district, atop the quaint Rue Mouffetard. There are a couple of sidewalk terraces to sit at there, and the view is great. I would also recommend Place des Abbesses, on the Montmartre Hill. Though the local cafe terraces are usually packed, I just dig the place for its early-fall, after-school feel. Lastly, I would not miss the cafe 'Flore en L'Isle' which sits at the end of the Pont St Louis (St Louis Bridge), at the western tip of the Saint Louis Island. They serve Berthillon ice creams and sorbets, and the view is great.



Cool streets to roam



The best way to visit Paris is on foot and subway. Don't take cabs, traffic is awful. Use the subway to move from one spot to a distant other. Otherwise, just walk. And while walking, never forget to raise your eyes. Interesting details will pop at you which are rarely noticed by those who only look at eye level.



For romancing the love of your life, certain places have these very special qualities which will set them apart in your memories of togetherness. I will tell you about three for now, and there will be more to come.



Atop my list, 'Place Furstemberg'. From the plaza of the St Germain Church, walk toward the Seine and Rue Bonaparte. Turn right into Rue de l'Abbaye. Follow the street to the first short alley on your left. Turn and you end up on 'Place Furstemberg'. French painter Eugene Delacroix had his studio there, and this makes an interesting spot to visit during daytime. But 'Place Furstemberg' takes a whole other atmosphere at night. It is quiet, isolated, and sort of private. The nearby abbey lends it a historical feel. Sitting under the trees, the wooden benches welcome eternal lovers.



The Montmartre Hill has a flavor of its own. This is a spot you can spend days discovering. Montmartre used to be a small village outside Paris walls, and was only integrated to Paris at the turn of the 19th century. Thanks to its dwellers and their sense of beauty and dignity, Montmartre has managed for a large part to keep its 'olden days' atmosphere. The personality of the hill expresses itself fully at night. Street lamps lend its streets a surreal feel, most notably at mid-hill level. Take one of the steep flights of stairs, and you are sent back in time. 'Montmartre Nightly' should be part of your memory lane.



As a final destination for this short trip, let me take you to the park located at the tip of 'Ile de la Cite'. This is the largest of the two islands, and the small park named 'Square du Vert Galant' takes its name from King Henri the 4th, a womanizer in his own right ('Galant' alludes to his reputation as a smooth talker, and 'Vert' means the guy was 'always ready to fire'). Walk to the 'Pont Neuf' bridge, go down the flight of stairs opening behind Henri's statue, and you will wind up on the wharf. There, lined with century-old trees, the park offers a magnificent view of the river Seine and the Louvre Museum. I recommend discovering the spot together during daytime. It is also the port of call of a boat tour operator. Seize this opportunity to boat upstream and downstream. Don't forget to bring an extra sweater, the temperature at water level is chillier.

Nobu: Toro! Toro! Toro!

October 31, 1994

In toro-loving circles, the landfall in Manhattan of Nobu Matsuhisa was hailed as if it were the Second Coming if not the First. The chef's taste and bravado, honed on a path from Japan to Alaska to Peru and Argentina, had lured the crème de la crème as well as the skim milk of Hollywood to his cramped temple of vinyl on La Cienega Boulevard. Now, in league with TriBeCa ward boss Robert De Niro and his restaurant right-hand Drew Nieporent, Matsuhisa realized it made no sense to clone a dump – not in the gracious old bank the partners had leased to house Nobu.

Still, no one could have guessed that out of designer David Rockwell's fertile noggin would come sheer enchantment: the cobalt-blue horizon of the smoking room, set behind blue velvet and winter twigs; the copper leaf and off angles of the ceiling; the real birches with ersatz branches; the curving wall of black river stones ("like a slab of beluga," rhapsodized the Voice), and the usual Rockwell wit (thirties fans and fish on chenille, cherry blossoms painted on the beechwood floor, tall stools with chopstick legs, the service bar in a bank vault). Just when we're ready not to be amused again by the irrepressible Rockwell, he tosses off his best design yet.

Worshipfully, a fan asks Nobu, "Please explain the Japanese symbolism in those odd panels on the wall." Nobu shrugs. "I don't know," he says, "ask David."

Rockwell: "Symbolism? What symbolism?" he says. "They're not Japanese. I just wanted something to insulate sound." So much for Zen and the art of noise-muffling.

Nobu or not Nobu. Opinions are fierce. Brilliant, says one. A disaster, reports another. He loved it. She hated it. The crowd is in full surge. With no World Series going, the new sport in town is table-nabbing. I call Nieporent requesting a spot for out-of-town friends, not me. Can't fool Drew. "What a waiting list tonight," he says. "Madonna and a party of six want 8:30. Calvin and six, 8:30. Martha Stewart and six, 8:30. Peter Guber, six… Jean-Claude Van Damme. And guess who I'm calling back first." He wants it to sound like a complaint, but clearly, he's in Heaven. Mere mortals will go on hold for a while. Is this a revival of sushi chic?

No wonder the crowd looks smug that first night, heads swiveling to see the faces that will confirm their own belonging. There are ritual martial cries from the crowded covey of chefs chopping and slashing behind the sushi counter. Our waiter, an import from La Cienega, has not lost his Hollywood. "Irasshai," he barks in traditional welcome to each new arrival. Alas, he can't get our order straight, urging us to begin with cold dishes, then bringing hot and forgetting half. Toro tartare with caviar in a small frosted-glass dish on a doily is worth the $25, I suppose; the voluptuous tuna belly is a sensory explosion.

"In my 25 years in business, this is my first doily," says Nieporent.

And we are enchanted by the special crisp fried sea eel with a spicy garlic sauce and the New Zealand mussels in a powerful potion. But the rock shrimp glisten with grease, the sushi rolls are rather ordinary, and the famous "squid pasta" (squid cut like fettuccine, with asparagus, garlic, and butter) is merely a pleasant joke without a punchline. "Is this Cheez Whiz?" my chums want to know, rejecting the crab in too much spicy mayonnaise. And they won't even taste the luscious black cod in miso.

Not even the Gilligan's Island charm of pouring cold sake from a hollowed-out bamboo carafe, not even a slight tipsiness, helps. "If we're still hungry, I'll buy everyone a pizza for dessert," I promise. But they are already applying compresses of dessert to bruised expectations, loving the ginger crème brûlée and the orange tart with bitter-chocolate sorbet and a leathery chocolate crust but dismissing red-bean spring roll -- "it looks like larva." I try to convince them it has whimsy, with its spidery sweet-noodle web, but I can see what they mean. And the green-tea crème caramel does look and taste like mousse of liver.

I don't even want to tell my friends how terrible it was. They are all crying, "brilliant," "sheer genius," "astounding." My mistake was to order à la carte at the table, they tell me. The secret is to sit at the bar (no reservations necessary) and order the daily omakase tasting (the chef decides; $60 and up, depending). How long may one have to wait? Somehow I doubt that Sony Music CEO Mickey Schulhof gets shuffled off to the Tribeca Grill like the minor-league sushi-bar standees. Now it's our turn. A couple still delirious from their first immersion in omakase join me – we order two dinners for three ($203, tax included) – thrifty, considering, and filling but aesthetically perilous. It's not easy to divide one slender burdock or one gingko nut.

And the seduction begins. An attack on all the sense, from the smart lacquer fan tray and sea-foam-opalescent bowl that excite the eye to the oddly wonderful gelatinous broth of the seafood with baby bok choy and the melting sweetness of swiftly seared tuna belly tattooed with tiny circles of fiery jalapeño that play on the tongue. Hard to imagine three grown-ups so fixated on two small serrated curls of fluke – "It looks like skate reduced on the copy machine," one friend observes, exclaiming over the citric intensity of yuzu. That's how obsessed foodies do carry on. Even the tempura that disappointed with its vapid predictability at the table seems splendid now in a limited edition – just asparagus, broccoli, smelt, and an oyster wrapped in shiso leaf. And thinnest slices of orange with mint layered in that wondrous green bowl have exactly the acid tang that makes a perfect finale.

Time to get real. I've racked up $500 in expenses here by now and not seen a sign of the master, off tending shop in California. It may be that Matsuhisa has not yet found the feel of home in our town. Alerted to the chef's return, I let a VIP friend of the house reserve. Now Drew is off on his bi-coastal rounds. Think of the mileage building up. But with Nobu darting about, Drew may be redundant. Politicians press the flesh. Nobu presses the fish. I have the illusion he is out in the kitchen personally adjusting each leaf destined for our booth.

Two plump oysters with caviar are a classic, understated first pitch. A bowl of Matsuhisa special sauce (minced ginger and shallot with soy, mirin, and sesame oil) accompanies fillets of fast-seared tuna, and we hoard it for the rest of the evening, though no dish ever needs the gilding. The whitefish is raw and unusually crisp in a yuzu glaze with just a drop of hot-pepper sauce – "That's the chef's South American influence," says the manager, Richard Notar. He's everywhere, too, calling the plays, explaining. A dab of that spicy mayonnaise does magic to mere halibut. Our host doffs his Matsuhisa baseball cap and calls for bread to dab up the sauce. "If the man uses mayonnaise, can bread be far behind?" he muses. "You could get them to send some from Tribeca Grill," I suggest. The waiters have been shuttling in all evening from the Grill and from Nieporent's Montrachet, just a few blocks north. So a bread run would not be outrageous. Fortunately, my chum lacks the nerve to insist.

Given the glow of so much attention, I may be imaging that the "new-style sashimi" is even more wonderful tonight – my friend is mopping up the sesame with his finger. And why not? I'm mopping, too. A small salmon steak is served barely jelled with shiitake and deep-fried spinach. A tiny tea cup of thick and exotic broth is "Nobu's answer to Chinese shark's fin soup," says Notar. After sweet eel fillets on red-tinged lettuce there is sushi, of course – yellowtail, toro again, a shiitake mushroom limp as a Dali pocket watch, and an odd vegetal thing with a hula skirt of sprouts.

Nobu stands by, grinning. "More?" he asks. Clearly he thinks we've had enough.

Got Iodine Salt in that Milk? Unassuming sources of abscess aggravate

Iodine is a trace mineral that regulates thyroid hormones while promoting normal growth and development. It is present in iodized salt, seafood and crops grown in iodine rich soil.
So you’ve read that excessive amounts of iodine can irritate your pores and provoke acne. So what do you do? Avoid excess iodine, right?
But iodine shows up in a motley of unassuming locals as Jean Carper, points out in Food Your Miracle Medicine. For instance, the Recommended Daily Allowance, RDA, of iodine for adults is 150 mcg, but one cup of milk has 88mcg of iodine, that’s over half of the RDA. One egg has 24 mcg and a slice of American cheese carries 16 mcg of iodine. And the content of iodine in some fast food meals has exceeded the RDA by as much as 10 times.
Just because excess iodine may provoke acne does not mean you want to ex it out our your diet. Poor iodine intake can result in Goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland, and Cretinism, which causes dwarfism and mental retardation
Foods that contain large amounts of iodine include:
•Iodized salt, sea salt, and salty foods. Because it's hard to know which restaurants use iodized salt, you might want to avoid eating out during this time
•All dairy products (milk, sour cream, cheese, cream, yogurt, butter, ice cream)
•Margarine
•Egg yolks
•Seafood (fish, shellfish, seaweed, kelp)
•Foods that contain carrageen, agar-agar, algin, or alginate - all of these are made from seaweed
•Many prepared and/or cured meats (ham, bacon, sausage, corned beef, etc)
•Fresh chicken or turkey with broth or additives injected
•Dried fruit
•Canned vegetables
•Commercial bakery products
•Chocolate
•Molasses
•Soy products (soy sauce, soy milk, tofu)
•Any vitamins or supplements that contain iodine
•FD&C red dye #3 - this appears in many foods or pills that are red or brown, including colas
Foods with moderate amounts of iodine include:
•Egg whites
•Fresh noncured meat from the butcher
•Matzoh
•Homemade bread made with non-iodized salt and oil (not soy!) instead of butter or milk
•Most fresh fruits and vegetables (but not too much spinach & broccoli), washed well
•Frozen vegetables that don't have high-iodine ingredients (like regular salt) added
•Canned peaches, pears and pineapples
•Natural unsalted peanut butter
•Clear sodas
•Coffee or tea, as long as it's made with distilled water. But remember, only non-dairy creamer!
•Popcorn popped in vegetable oil or air popped, with non-iodized salt
•Sorbet - but remember to check the ingredient list for FD&C red dye #3!
As with all things, self-knowledge and moderation are the keys to divine health. It’s always good to know what you are eating before it starts eating away at you.

The Many Uses of Acai Berry Juice

Acai berry juice has a number of uses that can help bring a new and healthier you into being. Acai is a small purple or green berry that has a high nutritional value, as a result it is highly prized in the health food market. However, this fruit is not viable long after harvest so it is usually shipped as Acai berry juice or as frozen/dried berries.
Acai berry juice does not have to be used strictly by itself. It is perfect addition for a variety of different foods. It can even be added to just plain water to give a healthy, preservative and sugar free flavoring to your water.
For those that like flavored coffee here is a great way to not only get an energy kick times two but get all the nutritional value of Acai berry juice. These are some of the best ways to get the nutritional value that comes from the Acai.
The juice is packed with B-vitamins, Beta-carotene, Calcium, Copper and Chromium, even iron, magnesium, and Zinc can be found. All of these ingredients help with handling stress, providing energy, increasing the metabolism even helping to produce healthy skin, hair and eyes. There are even ongoing studies that show that Acai berry juice added to the diet can help with chronic illnesses such as Diabetes and may be able to help those who are at risk or who have cancer.

All in one night: it is the New Year's Eve of Grand Hotel Terme Astro. The hotel has prepared for its guests an irresistible tourbillon of music, dancing, good food and a touch of risk at the green table.
More original than theme parties, more involving than live concerts in public places, trendier than vip clubs, in one night the four-star resort offers pure fun, to say goodbye to 2008 and give the best welcome to 2009.

Unforgettable songs and magnificent choreographies will entertain the guests till dinner. At 9.30 pm the scenario changes: from the stage of the Teatro Dell'Acqua to the halls of the restaurant Delle Calle, where the gastronomic show, magisterially directed by the chefs, will start at 9.30 pm with a delicious menu.
The delicate tastes of rthe fish are perfectly combined with the strong ones of the meat in order to create an exquisite dinner.

After the risotto with truffle and porcini and Pasta “sacks” stuffed with crabmeat and courgettes, it is time for the crayfish Catalan and filets of ox Rossini accompanied with side dishes and a champagne sorbet in the middle. And then, grand final with tropical in Grand Marnier, dessert and spumante.
At the hotel children are special guests. Only for the little ones a special New Year's Eve Dinner with prosciutto and salami accompanied by pizzas, lasagnas, veal cutlets in breadcrumbs, roasted potatoes, chocolate pudding, cubes of pandoro and a special toast.
After the midnight it will start a long journey with the time machine, to follow the romantic love story of Danny and Sandy, the protagonists of the musical Grease. Welcoming the new year at the rhythm of marvellous songs: can you imagine a better way to start 2009?

Blanca, one of North County San Diego's newest fine dining restaurants is definitely suitably named. With snow white dining plates, table linens, pendant lanterns, and a prominent concrete bar, Blanca is elegant, classy, and cool-just like Solana Beach and the surrounding North County area.

Proprietors Seth Bass and Debbie Hugonin named the restaurant Blanca for this exact reason. They envisioned an establishment with the same hip sophistication that Solana Beach restaurants carry. Their vision "was to bring together all that [they] cared about into one place; family, friends, great food, and fine wine. [Their] vision became Blanca."

The cuisine at Blanca innovatively fuses contemporary California cuisine with the sensibility of traditional French technique. Blanca uses local organic produce and local, sustainable seafood whenever possible. Executive Chef Wade Hageman is constantly adding new dishes to the ever changing menu and the General Manager and Sommelier Zubin Desai serves up charisma and top notch wine pairings in the front of the house.

The tranquil, minimalist dining room has perfectly dimmed lighting, comfortable seating offering both booths and tables, and accommodates up to twenty-two guests. Blanca boasts a private, outdoor patio complete with a fifty-two inch plasma monitor and iPod docking port. With polished servers, a stunning bar and lounge, and a classy clientele, Blanca is easily holding its place as one of North County San Diego restaurants most desired dining locales.

Beginning with the starters, Blanca offers moderately priced finger foods such as Heirloom Wisconsin Black Popcorn with finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano and Truffle Salt, Truffled French Fries with Black Truffle Mayonnaise, Crispy Baby Violet Artichokes with Baby Fennel and Garlic Aïoli, Tempura Salt and Pepper Jumbo Prawns with Tellicherry Pepper-Lime Dipping Sauce and Scallions, Deep Fried Baby Zucchini with Fresh Tomato Sauce, and Dungeness Crab Deviled Eggs.

Raw appetizers include Market Oysters on the Half Shell with Champagne Mignonette and Lime Cocktail Sauce, Hawaiian Kona Kampachi Yellowtail with pickled Radish Salad and crystallized Ginger Vinaigrette or a Sushi Rice Cake and fermented Black Bean Vinaigrette, and Niman Ranch Filet Mignon Tartare with Quail Egg Yolk and toasted Peanut Oil served "Thai Style."

Traditional starters vary from a Young Greens Salad with toasted Pine Nuts, Laura Chenel Goat Cheese, and Oven-Dried Tomato Vinaigrette, Linguini with Clam Sauce with Manila Clams, Monterey Bay Calamari, and Sweet Butter-Chili Flake Emulsion, Summer Watermelon Timbale with Micro Cilantro, Greek Feta Cheese, and Champagne Vinaigrette, Crispy Petaluma Quail with Haricot Verts, Buttermilk Potato Purée, and Red Eye Gravy, to Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras with Griddled Strawberry Broiche and Strawberry Gatrique, Squash Blossom Soup with Baby Zucchini and Chive Essence, and Chino Farms Corn Soufflé with Black Truffle Cream.

At this point you will likely be ready for one of Blanca's signature martinis or cocktails. Try the "Peach-Pom," made with Absolut Apeach Vodka, Pama Liqueur, and Peach Purée, or the "Lemon-Ginger Cooler," made with Lemongrass-Infused Vodka, muddled Cilantro, and Schweppes Ginger Ale.

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Marrakech, Morocco by TravelPod blogger Chooklotto titled "Last morning in Essa then the magic of Marrakech" Chooklotto's travel blog entry: "Well finally I got out of bed early today and just after 7am I wandered down to the fish market by the port. There wasn't much happening today (bad night out in the sea apparently) so I took some nice shots of the blue fishing boats then walked down and along the beach. There were hundreds of seagulls sitting there - probably disappointed by the lack of fish cut-offs from the fisherman! I made my way via the medina then through Bab Marrakesh - was really quiet at 8am in the morning and I enjoyed it a lot. Back at the hotel I enjoyed brekky in peace before most of the others came down just after 9am. I went up for a shower and a repack of my backpack then made my way to the internet so I could book some accommodation in Dublin and organise a ticket to the Guinness Factory!. I made a trip back to the book exchange man and did a deal then finally went back to Sharon and Steve's place in the hope of a piece of carrot cake. Unfortunately a few of the others from the group had been there earlier so I had to have the banana cake which was still just as good! We all met at 3pm so we could make the quick walk to the bus stop around the corner - our bus was waiting for us so we put our bags underneath and sat and waited until departure. It took just under 3hrs to get to Marrakesh - no stops ...
